Comprehension | Fluency | Reading | Main Idea | Language Comprehension
Understanding the meaning of any written text is the ultimate goal of any reading program.
This book was designed to support just that. In the Science of Reading, Text Comprehension is what developing Phonics and Vocabulary skills is all about. After learning how to decode words and expand vocabulary, the next step for students is overall comprehension which means understanding individual words, as well as how they are used in sentences, paragraphs, and texts as a whole.
Finding the Main Idea is the starting point for comprehension. It gives students a foundation for a deeper discovery of meaning. The activities in this book start with finding the main idea of a sentence and then progress to finding the main idea of a paragraph or short passage. This practice helps students learn to ask and answer questions about the meaning of the text they are reading after every paragraph or so. The activities progress in difficulty as students gain confidence by mastering the beginning activities.
The task card format allows for specifically targeted practice and flexible usage: homework, seatwork, warmups, independent study, etc. The short, doable activities vary in degrees of difficulty and are colorful, engaging, and fun. While some activities may be challenging, the sense of accomplishment and skills gained are worth the effort.
