Phonics/Phonemic Awareness/Compound Words/ Fluency/ Reading/ Decoding
Being able to successfully decode words is the key to becoming a confident, fluent reader.
This book was designed to support two of the essential component of the Science of Reading: Phonics and Phonemic Awareness. It’s meant for students who have already been introduced to phonics but who still need practice to attain mastery and to easily use phonics to decode words.
The focus of this book is targeted practice with compound words. Students are reminded of the three kinds of compounds: open, closed, and hyphenated. Understanding how two unlike words come together to make a new word helps facilitate fluency.
The task card format allows for specifically targeted practice and flexible usage: homework, seatwork, warmups, independent study, etc. The short, doable activities vary in degrees of difficulty and are colorful, engaging, and fun. While some activities may be challenging, the sense of accomplishment and skills gained are worth the effort.
