Science of Reading, Fluency, Automaticity, Prosody, Timed-Reading, Differentiated Instruction, Summarizing
Fluency is demonstrated when a student can read aloud smoothly and accurately with a natural pace and expressive tone showing comprehension of the text.
Reading Fluency is the culmination of the hard work a student has put into the other main aspects of the Science of Reading: Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, and Text Comprehension. The stories in this set of task cards provide students the opportunity to practice automaticity and prosody so they can perfect their fluency.
One of the ways that automaticity can be measured is by WCPM. Each story passage has a word count and progress can be tracked using the included Fluency Tracker chart for automaticity. Prosody is supported by an optional summarizing activity to help reinforce comprehension of each reading passage. Progress in prosody can be tracked using the included Fluency Tracker chart for prosody.
The task card format is perfect for differentiated instruction so the teacher can meet and support the student at their individual reading level. The topics chosen for these stories represent common topics included in middle school social studies curriculum. The stories are presented in two parts. Depending on the student’s abilities, the stories can be read in parts or as a whole.
