Improve Reading Comprehension Skill by Skill!
Do you have students who need extra practice with comprehension skills? Then, this product was designed especially for you. Short, high-interest, one-paragraph reading passages were specifically written to aid students in using “Context” to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words within a story.
SPECIFIC SKILL: CONTEXT
Being able to use context in a reading passage to understand unfamiliar words is an essential skill for building vocabulary and increasing reading fluency. Using context means understanding the connection between the words, phrases, and sentences in a reading passage. The words surrounding an unfamiliar word help determine its meaning.
READING PASSAGES
Each card has four short, one paragraph reading passages. Two of the sentences have missing words. Three words are offered as possibilities. Students must pay attention to all of the words in the paragraph to determine which word best completes each sentence.
The reading passages are arranged in ascending order. The progression allows students to begin at a lower reading level (Card 1a) and move on to higher levels (Card 8b) as their skills improve.
Reading levels begin at 3.0 and progress to 4.5 according the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Scale.
QUESTIONS
Each paragraph has two sentences with missing words. Students are offered three choices to pick the word that best completes the sentence. They must use context to help chose the correct answer.
Pre-printed answer strips can be filled out and used for students to mark down their answers.
