Easy Reading Awesome Animals was created to appeal to reluctant and/ or
struggling readers. The stories are ideal to use with individual
students or with a small group. The reading level of the stories ranges
from grade 1.0 to grade 2.5, as determined by the Flesch-Kincaid
Readability Scale. The wide array of fascinating animal topics and the
accompanying realistic illustrations will captivate and hold the
interest of any student reading below grade level, regardless of his or
her age.
The stories were written using controlled vocabulary and
simple sentence structure. Prominent within the stories is the
repetition of words and phrases, most noticeably the repetition of each
paragraph’s first sentence at the end of the paragraph. This technique
has been found to help struggling readers begin to quickly recognize
words and phrases, thereby improving reading fluency. The four questions
that follow each story will test reading comprehension by requiring
students to find facts and locate answers within the story.
Contents:
This product is comprised of 40 stories and accompanied by a 48-page
unit of coordinating activities. Activity pages in the unit are
reproducible and include cloze reading, alphabetizing, and sentence
writing. A “Words to Know” list is included for use prior to reading the
stories.
Vocabulary Suggestions & Extended Activities:
Use the “Words to Know” list prior to reading to introduce any words the student may not be familiar with.
Discuss the particular animal the student has chosen to read about.
Find out what the student may already know about the animal. Has he or
she seen one? Where might this animal be seen? Is this animal dangerous?
Would this animal make a good pet?
Following completion of a
story, assign the coordinating activity page. Have the student read the
completed fill-in-the-blank sentences aloud to assure that they make
sense.
When the student shows an interest in a particular animal,
help him or her find out more about that animal by using another
resource.
